A close up of the head of 60 ft figure of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelugpa Sect of Buddhism (yellow hats) at the Great Monastery, Gyantse. There are three copies of this photograph in the collection and Mackenzie has given one of them the title ‘When Buddha smiles’.

Three copies. Part of a collection of 81 loose black and white photographs taken by Fleming Mackenzie while serving in Tibet in 1938-1939. From the Collections of Lieut.-Col. Fleming Mackenzie, donated by his daughter Mrs Ann O’Neill in 2022.
