Sun Lung, a native of Kiangsu province, served at the Hsuan-te (1426-1435) court and excelled at painting birds and flowers as well as plants and insects. Using only ink, he followed in the Northern Sung (960-1126) tradition of “boneless” ink and wash painting, but actually he formed a style of his own. This work comes from “Album of Sketches from Life by Sun Lung with Calligraphy by Yao Kung-shou.” It shows a dragonfly and a damselfly perched on the tip of a plant. The light touch of the brushwork looks almost like it was carelessly finished. Sun, however, was able to fully grasp the pose and spirit of these insects. The accompanying calligraphy by Yao Kung-shou (1423-1495) is also fluid, adding an elegant scholar’s touch to this sketch from nature. |

Sketch from Life Sun Lung (15th c.) Ming Dynasty Sun Lung, a native of Kiangsu province, served at the Hsuan-te (1426-1435) court and excelled at painting birds and flowers as well as plants and insects. Using only ink, he followed in the Northern Sung (960-1279) tradition of “boneless” ink painting, but actually formed a style of his own. This work comes from “Album of Sketches from Life by Sun Lung”. It shows two dragonflies and a damselfly perched on the tip of a plant. The light touch of the brushwork looks almost carelessly finished. Sun, however, was able to completely grasp the pose and spirit of these insects. The accompanying calligraphy by Yao Kung-shou (1423-1495) is also fluid, adding an elegant scholar’s touch to this sketched scene from nature. |
Drawing from Life Sun Lung (15th century) Ming dynasty Sun Lung was a native of Ch’ang-chou in Kiangsu province. His style names were Ts’ung-chi and T’ing-cheng, sobriquet Tu-ch’ih. He was the grandson of Duke K’ai-kuo Chung-min, Sun Hsing-tsu (1336-1370). He entered the court during the Hsuan-te reign (1426-1435) and magistrate later became the Prefect of Hsin-an Prefecture. By nature perceptive and smart, it is said that Sun bore the air of an immortal. He excelled in painting birds, animals, flowers, and landscapes. His bird-and-flower and grass-and-insect paintings are completely shaded with color washes, making use of the boneless method of Hsu Ch’ung-ssu and Chao Ch’ang, but he established a style of his own. This painting in a boneless style depicts two dragonflies on grass. The relaxed brushwork gives the appearance of carelessness, but conveys the mood of the liveliness of a fine summer day. This painting is the fifth leaf from the Drawing of life by Sun Lung Accompanied by Yao Kung-shou’s inscriptions. |
